第一進,青年夫婦文雅好學、修身立品;
第二進,中年夫婦持家有道、敦厚穩重;
第三進,花甲夫婦身心康健、守禮修身;
第四進,耄耋夫婦積善傳家、心性慈悲;

一梳梳到底,夫妻同心、白頭相守;
二梳白髮齊眉,患難與共、榮辱不離;

西方靠制度養老,孤獨終老;
孔學思想,是民族立身之根;

The Eternal Value of Chinese Ethical Civilization Reflected by "The First Family Under Heaven"
A Comparative Study of Chinese and Western Family Culture & Contemporary Enlightenment
By: Charlie Lei, CEO of Global Overseas Chinese History Museum
Date: August 10, 2026
Abstract
The enduring prosperity of Chinese civilization across five thousand years originates not from military power or territorial expansion, but from the ethical system established by Confucius in The Analects. The legendary “First Family Under Heaven” witnessed during Emperor Qianlong’s Southern Tour represents the most complete and authentic model of traditional Chinese family ethics.
This article restores the complete historical tale, traces Confucian cultural origins, compares Eastern and Western civilizations, and integrates the author’s cross-cultural overseas Chinese growth experience. It illustrates the core traditional virtues: respecting teachers, honoring elders, marital loyalty, and family inheritance.
Rooted in family ethics, the Chinese nation has survived countless wars and hardships with unbroken bloodlines and enduring civilization. In contrast, Western individualism leads to alienated kinship and lonely elderly life in nursing homes, forming a regrettable cultural defect of modern Western society.
Growing up in Zhongshan, the hometown of Dr. Sun Yat-sen and a famous overseas Chinese hometown, the author has personally witnessed the differences between Eastern ethics and Western lifestyles. This paper serves as essential reading for contemporary youth in self-cultivation, family governance, social commitment and national prosperity.
1. Complete Historical Story of “The First Family Under Heaven”
During the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty, the emperor traveled south in plain clothes to inspect folk customs. He encountered a grand Liu Clan Mansion bearing the golden plaque “The First Family Under Heaven”.
Surprised by the title, the emperor entered the residence to seek the truth. The mansion consisted of five halls accommodating five generations, with every couple harmonious and every generation orderly: young scholars, virtuous middle-aged couples, healthy senior couples, pious elderly couples, and centenarian patriarch and matriarch Liu Rong.
When asked the meaning of the plaque, the first four generations all respectfully replied that the profound meaning belonged to their ancestors.
The centenarian Liu Rong showed the imperial visitor the family motto on the screen:
“Wealth abounds in the world, yet none surpass our nobility; nobility abounds, yet none surpass our prosperity; prosperous clans exist widely, yet none have five generations of scholars; scholarly families of five generations exist, yet none maintain complete harmonious marriages through five generations.”
Emperor Qianlong fully understood and praised: wealth, status and fame are common in the world, but five generations of complete, harmonious and united family life is unparalleled under heaven. This is the true meaning of the nation’s most honorable family.
2. Millennium Confucian Ethics Rooted in Chinese Folk Culture
For more than two thousand years, The Analects has shaped Chinese national character:
Respect teachers, honor elders, parent-child affection, spousal righteousness, and orderly generational hierarchy.
The traditional Chinese three-combing wedding ritual carries millennial blessings for family prosperity:
First comb: lifelong loyalty and eternal marriage;
Second comb: sharing fortune and hardship till grey hair;
Third comb: flourishing descendants and everlasting family heritage.
Chinese culture regards family as the foundation of the nation. Thanks to this complete ethical system, the Chinese nation has endured endless wars, dynastic changes and social turbulence while maintaining unbroken heritage, stable clans and prosperous civilization.
3. Civilization Contrast: Eastern Family Warmth vs. Western Lonely Old Age
Western society is centered on individualism. Children separate from parents after adulthood, creating alienated intergenerational relationships.
Most Western seniors spend their later years in nursing homes. Although supported by advanced medical systems and public welfare, they lack family companionship, filial care and descendants’ company. Material comfort cannot fill spiritual loneliness.
Western society relies on institutional support for old age, often ending in lonely solitude;
Chinese civilization relies on blood kinship and family ethics, enjoying multi-generational reunion and lifelong warmth.
4. Witness of an Era: Cross-Cultural Growth of an Overseas Chinese Descendant
The author was born in Zhongshan City, Guangdong — the hometown of Dr. Sun Yat-sen, a city with profound historical heritage and outstanding overseas Chinese tradition.
Growing up in a prestigious overseas Chinese family, I witnessed my ancestors’ arduous struggles crossing oceans to build families and pursue dreams overseas. Traditional Chinese culture has been embedded deeply in my character: reverence for teachers, filial piety, etiquette, loyalty and family priority.
Living in a typical overseas Chinese hometown, I have personally experienced the sharp contrast between Eastern collectivist ethics and Western individualist lifestyles. This unique dual-cultural perspective allows me to profoundly understand the unparalleled warmth, strength and eternity of traditional Chinese family civilization. I am a genuine witness of this transitional era of cultural convergence.
5. Invitation to Global Scholars and Cultural Lovers
We sincerely invite historians, postgraduate researchers, cultural scholars and all history lovers to join our academic exchange and in-depth discussion.
Together, we shall perceive the profound heritage and gentle temperature of Confucian civilization that has influenced the world for over two thousand years.
This publication aims to become essential reading for the new generation:
Cultivate personal morality, unite families, govern society, serve the nation, and bring peace to the world.
Conclusion
The glory of “The First Family Under Heaven” represents not merely one household’s fame, but the immortal ethical faith of the entire Chinese nation.
Confucian philosophy sustains our civilization, stabilizes our society, warms our people and strengthens our nation. Western civilization gains individual freedom yet loses kinship warmth, while Eastern civilization stands firm through thousands of years of storms and hardships.
May contemporary youth inherit tradition, cultivate virtue, uphold family ethics, revitalize Chinese culture, and spread the brilliance of Oriental civilization across the globe.
